Now open for signups! Campers: Signups for SAGA’s Fall Campout at the Shady Cove Group Campground are now open. As usual, this trip is a joint venture with LA and San Diego SAGA. Following on the successful trip to El Prado last month, this trip will offer the option of two nights or three nights. The two night option is from Friday to Sunday, while the three night option is from Friday to Monday. (We were unable to rent the campsites for Thursday night due to maintenance on the access road.). Now about the trip. Shady Cove Group campsite is located at 7,300 feet near Keller Peak lookout, in the San Bernardino National Forest, not far from Running Springs. The campsite is actually located adjacent to the top of Snow Valley Ski Resort, which you pass on your way to Big Bear. One group usually hikes through the Ski Area to the top at Slide Peak, then to the Fire Lookout tower on nearby Keller Peak. From here you get a view of much of Southern California, all the way to Catalina Island if it is clear. There are many other hikes in the area, or you can visit the unique mountain towns of Big Bear or Lake Arrowhead. As you may know, SAGA rents group campsites to provide privacy, and collects a single fee to cover the costs of the campsite, food and beverages. These funds are then used to reimburse those who purchase supplies for the trip. The cost for the weekend is a low $115 for two nights, or $135 for three nights, which covers the campground rental and all food and beverages. One way we keep the cost low is by all pitching in and helping with the different tasks in planning and preparing meals and cleaning up after. SAGA campouts organize group meals, and each attendee will be assigned to help with one meal, help cook or another task. If you are a cook and can organize a meal, please volunteer to cook or help cook. We will assign a task to each person, as often as possible one that you volunteer to do on the signup form. You do not have to be a member of SAGA LA or SAGA San Diego, but you must acknowledge the waiver when signing up to participate. Driving directions to the camp and a list of campers and their assignments will be emailed to all participants just prior to the trip. We hope you can join us on our 92nd campout since 1980! The deadline for signups is September 8. If you have any questions, let me know. Ken Slater SAGA Camping [email protected] $115.00 (Sept 20-22, 2024) for two nights or $135 (Sept 20-23, 2024) for three nights
