Steve John, our SAGA secretary, describes this trip:
SAGA has a campout coming up June 14-16 in our local Laguna Mountains, and you really shouldn’t miss this. It’s a wonderful way to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and refresh your body and soul. We have a private group campsite in a truly beautiful spot, and it’s only an hour drive from the heart of the city. I have been going to these SAGA campouts for 20 years now, and I look forward to them so much that I put them on my calendar first and schedule the rest of my summer around them. I have always been surprised that more of you don’t go, so I thought I would let you know a bit about what you’ve been missing.
For only $85 you get all the food and drink you can possibly want, and this also pays for the camping fees and the wonderful company. It’s a great deal and incredibly well organized. Ken Slater and Tom Rosenberg from the LA SAGA group do all the organizing for the weekend and supply the group kitchen and so much more. They spend endless hours making these weekends possible, and you get to be the beneficiary of all their efforts. You simply volunteer to do one chore, the salad course for Saturday for example, and then the entire rest of the weekend you are being catered to. (There is a list of chores to choose from and more details on the sign-up form).
Come up anytime Friday at your leisure. We start with cocktails, dinner and a bonfire that evening. There is usually about 40 of us, and it’s party time. On Saturday we start with breakfast, and then a bunch of us go on a group hike. But if that’s not your cup of tea, you can play board games all day, be lazy and just hang out, wander off on your own private hike, or do whatever your heart desires. We have showers in the afternoon, and then we start drinking all over again. The evening begins again with cocktails and appetizers but can be much more extravagant than the night before. First a salad course comes out, followed by an often-extravagant full meal, and then an even more fabulous dessert. Some people take their tasks very seriously, so there can be wonderful culinary surprises. Sunday starts with coffee and snacks for early risers and then a hearty brunch about 10 AM as our last formal event.
Spending the weekend together gives you a great opportunity to meet new friends. I have made some of my most enduring and endearing friendships seeing the regulars year after year. All you need is a sleeping bag, air matrass and a tent, and you can rent those for the weekend or spend about $150 at COSTCO and get everything you need and be all set for next time. (Renting a motor home is also an option.) If you have ever thought about going camping, you won’t find a better opportunity than this.
I hope that whets your desire and you will all join us. That’s me with Achilles, the adorable four-legged red-head, in the center of the front row in the picture below. And, of course my partner Stevie sitting next to us. Don’t you want to be part of the picture next time? Get away from the bustle of the city, unwind and rejuvenate with us.
We will have a second camping trip later this summer on September 20-22 at Shady Cove in the San Bernardino mountains, but that is a longer drive, so don’t miss this one.
